I felt that Lynne Riggs' article was especially applicable to the translation piece that we just submitted. Translating articles is less one to one Japanese to English versus the creative writing pieces we worked with before. For articles, I think it is especially useful to focus on the big picture. Riggs suggests even reading the whole work and understanding it in depth before reanalyzing it under an English eye. Japanese and English style of journalism is quite different and for an article to feel natural, the translator has to work under the standards of the target language (paragraph structure, headings, etc.).
Charles Terry also made some very good points. I never considered it before but English writers care deeply about how written words sound spoken. When revising my writing growing up, I was told to read it out loud to ensure its comprehensibility. Before reading this, I wouldn't have even thought to consider that might be different cross-culturally.
Both authors make convincing arguments to look at the big picture (within smaller sections or whole work) of the piece before finalizing the translation. For fluency and readability, it is important that the writing style is consistent in the target language.
